Egham Gateway

The client

Graham Construction were the main contractor for this project working for Runnymede Borough Council and our work was commissioned by J B Hopkins.

Location

Egham, Surrey.

The problem

Egham is a historic town, and the Council embarked on a sensitive redevelopment of part of the central area to create a new square, shops, a cinema, and new housing. The plans delivered 101 new homes and a 100-bed student accommodation block consisting of studio apartments and communal areas.

Four of the blocks on site were new student accommodations and studio apartments that required fire sprinkler systems to be installed to comply with new building regulations.

The Brief

We were approached to fulfil the fire safety plans and design, install, commission and certificate a bespoke fire sprinkler system throughout the four blocks.

Project specifics

Further to a detailed brief from J B Hopkins, we installed to the BS9251:2014 standard using Concealed Quick Response Viking VK494 Sprinkler Heads throughout the four blocks.

Next Steps

Following commission, we have serviced and maintained the systems every year.

The Duration

Installation of the sprinkler system commenced in February 2021, with the final block being commissioned on time and within budget in April 2022.

Frequently Asked Questions

A mist system uses 70% less water than a traditional fire sprinkler system. In the event of an activation, the water damage will be minimal. Mist systems also require smaller tanks than traditional fire sprinklers, making them more cost and space effective.
Fire sprinklers are activated by heat. In the event of a fire the heat will rise and cause the triggering of the nearest head or heads. Common misconception: All heads in the building will activate in the event of a fire – This is not the case. Only heads closest to the fire will operate.
